उत्तर आंध्रप्रदेशातील निझामाबाद या लहान जिल्ह्यामधून आलेल्या फणिंद्रा सामांनी उद्योजक बनण्याचा कधीही विचार नव्हता केला. इंडियन इन्स्टिट्यूट ऑफ सायन्समधून पदव्युत्तर पदवी मिळवल्यानंतर बंगळूरुमध्ये असलेल्या कंपनीमध्ये ते आनंदाने काम करत होते.




ते दरवेळी घरी जाण्यासाठी हैदराबादपासून बस पकडत असत. २००५ मध्ये जेव्हा त्यांना दिवाळीचा सण आपल्या आई-वडिलांबरोबर साजरा करण्यासाठी विकेंडला आपल्या घरी जायचे होते, तेव्हा हैदराबादला जाण्यासाठीचे तिकीट बुक करण्यासाठी रोजच्या ट्रॅव्हल एजेंटकडे जाण्यास त्यांना उशीर झाला. तेथे पोहचल्यानंतर त्यांना समजले की, सर्व तिकिटांची विक्री झाली आहे.

अनेक ठिकाणी चौकशी करूनही त्यांना कोणत्याही ट्रॅव्हल एजेंटकडून तिकीट मिळवता आले नाही. हताश-निराश होऊन ते परत आपल्या अपार्टमेंटमध्ये आले. त्यांनी संपूर्ण विकेंड हा विचार करण्यामध्ये घालवला की, का कोणीही यावर उपाय शोधून काढत नाही?

त्याचदिवशी रात्री त्यांनी आपला हा अनुभव आपल्या फ्लॅटमधील सहकाऱ्यांना सांगितला. विकेंडमध्ये त्यांनी आपल्या रोजच्या ट्रॅव्हल एजेंटकडून त्याच्या तिकीट बुकिंग प्रक्रियेविषयी माहिती जाणून घेतली. त्या ट्रॅव्हल एजेंटला सुद्धा त्यांचे म्हणणे पटले होते, म्हणून त्याने मोठ्या उत्साहाने त्यांना सर्व माहिती दिली.

पण फणिंद्रा त्यावर कोणताही उपाय शोधू शकले नाही. त्यावर ट्रॅव्हल एजेंटने झालेली घटना विसरून परत जाण्याची विनंती केली.

फणिंद्रा यांना कोडींग आणि प्रोगामिंगविषयी कोणतीही माहिती नसून सुद्धा त्यांनी या तंत्रज्ञानातील समस्येचे उत्तर शोधण्याचे ठरवले. त्यासाठी फणिंद्रांना ट्रॅव्हल एजेंट हे बस ऑपरेटर्स बरोबर कसे काम करतात, हे जाणून घ्यायचे होते आणि त्याबद्दलच्या सर्व शंका दूर करायच्या होत्या. पण कोणत्याही ट्रॅव्हल एजेंटने त्यांना मदत केली नाही.

पण नशिबाने त्यांना एक तरुण ट्रॅव्हल एजेंट मिळाला, जो एक अभियंता सुद्धा होता, त्याने फणिंद्राच्या हेतूंना पूर्णपणे समजून घेतले आणि आनंदाने बस तिकिटांच्या जगतातील सर्व माहिती फणिंद्राला पुरवली.

त्यानंतर फणिंद्रांनी आपल्या फ्लॅटमेट्स बरोबर चर्चा केली आणि त्यांना स्वत:ची कल्पना बरोबर समजावून सांगितली. त्यांनी सांगितले की,

आपण ट्रॅव्हल एजेंटसाठी असे ओपन सोर्स आणि फ्री प्लॅटफॉर्म बनवायचे ज्यामुळे त्यांचे काम सोयीस्कर होईल.

फणिंद्रांना कोडींग आणि प्रोग्रामिंग येत नसूनसुद्धा त्यांनी हार मानली नाही, त्यांनी पुस्तके खरेदी करून त्यांच्याआधारे कोडींग आणि प्रोग्रामिंगचे शिक्षण घेतले.
फणिंद्रा आणि त्यांच्या मित्रांच्या एक महिन्याच्या मेहनतीनंतर शेवटी सॉफ्टवेयरची पहिली आवृत्ती तयार झाली. पण सर्वच एजन्सीजनी हे सॉफ्टवेयर आमच्या कामाचे नसल्याचे सांगून त्याचा वापर करण्यास नकार दिला. त्यामुळे फणिंद्रा यांनी यामध्ये काही बदल केले, जेणेकरून प्रवाश्यांना या सॉफ्टवेयरमध्ये तिकीट बुकिंग देखील करता येऊ शकेल. यानंतर त्यांनी रेडबस सुरू केली.
ट्रॅव्हल एजेंटना हा पर्याय त्यांचा खात्रीशीर फायदा करून देणारा वाटला. त्यामुळे रेडबसने कमी अवधीमध्ये खूप मोठे यश प्राप्त केले. ज्या लोकांना संगणक कसा वापरावा याचे सुद्धा ज्ञान नव्हते, अश्या लोकांनासुद्धा या सोयीचा फायदा सांगितल्याने तेही याचा लाभ घेऊ लागले.
त्यावेळी रेडबसला पुढील पाच वर्षामध्ये १०० बस ऑपरेटर यामध्ये सामील होणे अपेक्षित होते, परंतु फक्त एका वर्षामध्येच ४०० बस ऑपरेटरची नोंदणी झाली होती.
२०१४ मध्ये आयबीबोने ६०० कोटींना रेडबसला खरेदी केले. ह्या एका वेगळ्या कल्पनेमुळे फणिंद्राच्या बँकेच्या खात्यामध्ये एवढे पैसे जमा झाले की, आज तो आपले संपूर्ण आयुष्य काही न करता असेच बसून एन्जॉय करू शकतो. लोकांना मदत करण्याच्या आणि त्यांचा प्रवास सुखकर करण्याच्या हेतूमुळे आज त्याचेही भले झाले आणि लोकांचेही भले झाले.
